Tate Modern - November 2017
Now that all my outstanding edits and post production work are almost complete, there is no better place in my mind to go and find some inspiration and sit quietly and work on some documentary ideas than the Tate Modern.
With the recent addition of the `Blavatnik building’, the Tate Modern now has an even bigger bookshop to peruse and a second members’ room on the 8th Floor.
The price of the Tate membership is still a real bargain if, like me, you manage to make repeated visits during the course of the year.
For me especially in the winter it’s a comforting experience to wander the galleries and people watch.
Ibiza and Mallorca - September 2017
With autumn approaching, it was really nice to get some end of summer sunshine on the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca.
So much quieter than July and August and with the light starting to soften it’s a beautiful time to film.
First up was a wedding brand Film for TUI, just 3 shoot days and a lot of ground to cover, it made for long days and a very hectic schedule.
The great part was filming in very familiar surroundings. I have been taking pictures and making films in the north west of the island, around Pollenca, Soller and Deia for many years and never tire of the locations and the image making possibilities that are on offer.
Having a stripped down Alexa Mini gave us so much freedom to work quickly and as always the sensor just gives you so much latitude and freedom with available light, if only budgets covered Arri’s on every shoot.
Next up was a two week shoot in Ibiza again for TUI. As this was a destination film it allowed us to film some great bars, beaches, restaurants and people.
Haven’t been to Ibiza for a few years, so it was nice to be reminded of how diverse and chilled the island can be, especially at the end of the summer when the hoards of tourists have left and the residents of the island all breathe a sigh of relief.
Part of the shoot in Ibiza entailed filming for a few hours in the studio of the incredibly talented Àngela Martí, she makes the most beautiful handbags out of her studio in Ibiza old town. I would have loved to have spent more time filming in the studio as it presented some great visual opportunities - hoping that we can go back at some point and tell her story in more detail.
Croatia - July 2017
It has been so nice to spend 12 days with my family and close friends on the Island of Hvar and in the city of Dubrovnik.
Great food and company, what more can you wish for, well a longer break would be nice.
Jelsa provides a great place to rent a villa, the quiet port town offers some of the best open lake swimming, with incredibly clean and clear water in which to swim.
Not so well known is the family run restaurant `Konoba Dvor Dubokovic’. Situated in the hills of Pitve, a couple of kilometres outside of Jelsa, this lovely restaurant offers fantastic views of the Jelsa port town and combines simple meat dishes with a great wine selection.
Aruba 16mm - May 2017
Aruba is a great place to film, the people are some of the most relaxed and chilled out I have ever met, it more than lived up to its nickname as the `Happy Island’.
The Aruba project in May provided a great opportunity to get the Bolex 16mm camera out of the loft and shoot some film stock.
Just listening to the familiar sound of the film purring as it moves through the gate brought back some great memories of shooting on film.
It’s such a shame that budgets rarely allow for the experimentation that film stock affords. It has such a unique feel to it and I am really hopeful that at some point in the near future I can find the right client that is looking to take a bit of a risk. The rewards are so worth it.
Venice - January 2017
January in Venice is a special time, its probably at its quietest but also its coldest.
Great to be shooting some night shots on my Pentax 67, can’t believe the price of 120 Format film, shooting on film stock has become a very expensive hobby.
By 8pm the streets around Santa Croce, San Polo and campo Santa Margherita are totally deserted, very `Don’t Look Now’.
All that was missing was some fog but I have only ever seen that in February.
My son Noah came along to help me, which was great as it was nice to spend some quality time together.
Found a fantastic Bacaro and restaurant called La Patatina which was just around the corner from our apartment, great home cooked food at an affordable price. It has some interesting reviews on Trip Advisor but we enjoyed the bustling atmosphere. It must have been good as it was filled with locals.
Vietnam - July 2016
Unique opportunity to film on the island of Phu Quoc, on the southernmost tip of Vietnam.
Sadly filming out of season meant that we spent most of the week watching the rain fall which wasn’t in the brief. Still, we had a great local driver and two lovely fixers who made us smile all week and were a pleasure to spend time with.
